Arrrrrrrre you ready for some swashbuckler fun?
While the Cambridge Dictionary definition of a swashbuckler is “someone who enjoys and looks for dangerous and exciting experiences, especially someone in the past such as a pirate or other person who fights with a sword,” national fencing champion and coach and founder of East End Fencing Academy, Jennifer Murray adds a whimsical twist and defines it as “someone who engages in exciting adventures, explores the sea, builds skills in fencing (swords), and ultimately is a pirate!”
Beginning November 6, Jennifer will host a six-class program called “Swashbuckler Class” which will explore the basics of fencing and feature progressive fencing skill development through the play and imagination of pirate adventures.
During these classes, Jennifer will lead your child through strategy, physical skill-developing obstacle courses, much like a come-to-life pirate treasure map, theatrical fencing, and the quest to conquer a “large marine beast.”
If you’re wondering if this program is by the same Jennifer Murray you recently read about with the launching of “Friends of a Feather” — a monthly bird program by Turtleback Environmental Education Center, you are correct! Jennifer is a woman of many talents and interests. But this time, instead of a nature-focused program, Jennifer is tapping into another of her passions: fencing.
“Fencing is a martial art that requires discipline and focus. It is often referred to as ‘physical chess’ where the fencer thinks quickly on their feet,” Jennifer shared. “It’s a challenging sport but also a lot of fun.”
Jennifer has over 25 years of coaching experience including as a level 4 US Fencing Coach. She is also an accomplished competitive fencer with national championship titles and professional training as an Olympic alternate. Jennifer developed East End Fencing Academy in 2014 to provide fencing instruction to youth across the East End.
Swashbuckler Class, designed for children ages 5 and 6 (in Kindergarten through 1st grade,) will take place on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. at the NOFO Wellness Center in Cutchogue and will cost $180 for the full program.
All equipment is provided, however, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sneakers are the suggested attire.
