This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Long Island Aquarium — a milestone truly worth celebrating! From diverse marine life to immersive exhibits to expansive programming, the Long Island Aquarium has offered an impressive array of features to millions of visitors since it opened its doors. To celebrate its momentous anniversary, the Long Island Aquarium is offering 25 weeks of “fun highlights.”
“We have discounts on some favorite adventures, giveaways — both in person and on social media, we’ll have a ‘Then & Now’ photo contest where we ask visitors to recreate photos they took years ago, and a members-only anniversary party which will also incorporate an art show,” Darlene Puntillo, Director of Marketing and Advertising, shared in a recent interview. “We also have a coupon sheet with lots of different offers for our guests to take advantage of.”
In addition to the above highlights, there are also historic construction displays that explore photo displays documenting the construction of habitats, commemorative swag bags for the first 25 families who visit on the 25th of each month (April through September), discounted admission days, and more.
No matter if you live locally or come from afar, the Long Island Aquarium is worth the trip with new animals and creatures to meet and learn about with each visit.
“We don’t just have local animals; we have a Butterfly Garden with free-flying butterflies from all over the world. We have California Sea Lions — two of whom were rescued off the coast of California and needed a forever home,” Darlene shared. “Last year, we welcomed a Fishing Cat, a vulnerable species native to South and Southeast Asia. We’re the only facility in the Tri-State area with one.”
And even newer to the aquarium are four North American River Otters. In early February, resident River Otters, Flo and Stark, welcomed four pups. There is currently a naming poll that will run through Mother’s Day. Vote here!
But the Long Island Aquarium features even more than just marine life.
“We also have an array of amazing adventures guests can add onto their day,” said Darlene. “Like snorkeling with tropical fish and even real-life mermaids, a wonderful Tour Boat that explores the Peconic River, a Seal or Sea Lion Encounter, Take a Selfie with a Penguin, or even Dive with Sharks!”
The Long Island Aquarium also offers summer camp, school break camps, membership opportunities, and special discounted days.
“We’re trying to give back even more to our community this year to celebrate our milestone birthday,” Darlene added. “We’re here because of our community, we want to share the diversity of our Island and all the animals that call it home, and hope that through education we inspire conservation, here on Long Island and throughout the world.”
