Do-good baking for the whole family

One of the most impactful things we can teach our children is the importance of community. Understanding how people in a community work hand-in-hand to help one another is invaluable and integral for communities to sustain and thrive. And while we can tell children of this importance, the best way to actually teach is to do.

This Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., join Slow Food East End as they launch Flour Power for 2024 — a do-good initiative developed to combat food insecurity on the East End.

In this free, family-friendly workshop, attendees will hear and learn from Pennie Schwartz, former Chair and current Advisor and Bread Ambassador of Slow Food East End, as she walks through the specifics of the Flour Power program including its mission, recipe, dedicated food pantries, and more. Attendees will leave the workshop armed with a canvas tote filled with a complete starter kit which features: four metal loaf pans, dry ingredients, a recipe card, and bread bags — everything that’s needed to get you and your family baking.

By becoming a Flour Power baker or baking family, you and your crew will bake four loaves of bread from a simple, healthy recipe every two weeks in your home kitchen which you’ll then deliver three of the four loaves to designated food pantries across the North Fork including CAST and the North Fork Spanish Apostolate both located in Southold. Bakers are welcome to keep one loaf of bread for themselves to enjoy.

While baking bread with your family is sure to lead to flour-y fun, Flour Power’s goal is to “feed the forks,” and by baking, you and your family will be hands-on supporting that mission, from flour to fork.

The Bakers’ Workshop will be held at the Center for Advocacy, Support, and Transformation (CAST) which is located at 53930 Main Road in Southold. RSVP here.

If you cannot attend the workshop but would like to learn more about becoming a Flour Power baker visit Slow Food East End’s Flour Power webpage here.
