Where to watch a holiday flick on the North Fork

Watching a family-friendly holiday film is an event that is impossible to over-hype. Whether it’s a classic like “It’s A Wonderful Life” or a laughter-inducing flick like “Elf,” each will leave you and your crew festive and joyful. But what’s even better than watching from your own couch? Watching in a local theater. While the North Fork doesn’t currently have a dedicated movie theater, two local spots are serving up holiday films this season.

From musical performances and parties to screenings of some of the best holiday movies, The Suffolk on East Main Street in downtown Riverhead is fully immersed in holiday cheer. With three chances to catch a family-friendly festive film, you’re sure to get into the spirit.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, watch “Elf” — the 2003 Christmas comedy that follows Buddy’s (a human raised by Santa’s elves) journey to finding his biological father. On Wednesday, Dec. 13, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” will be screened, and on Wednesday, Dec. 20, fan-favorite “Home Alone” will play. The shows begin at 7 p.m., and tickets are $15 per person.

It’s important to note that The Suffolk is a cabaret-style venue rather than one with traditional theater seating. This means that patrons are seated at tables of four seats. There is also limited traditional theater-style row seating. Your ticket is specific to the table only, not to any particular seating location at that table. For more info and tickets, visit thesuffolk.org.

“A dream come true for our community” is what Tony Spiridakis called the North Fork Arts Center at the Sapan Greenport Theatre. There, the community is invited to attend free holiday screenings as a gesture of gratitude for the community’s outpouring of support of the historic theatre that successfully marked the end of an 11-month fundraising journey to secure it as a place to enjoy the arts, entertainment, and education year-round beginning in Spring 2024.

On Thursday, Dec. 28, and Friday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m., patrons are invited to watch “Elf” followed by a Q&A with special guest Producer Todd Komarnicki. On Saturday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m., “It’s A Wonderful Life” will be screened.

Holiday film screenings at the North Fork Arts Center will be free of charge, and seating will be first come, first served. Candy, soda, popcorn, and more will be available for purchase. Visit northfork-artscenter.org for more info.
